Order of Service Help
A little guidance when you need it
Putting together an Order of Service can feel daunting, especially when you're trying to arrange so many other things at the same time.
You don't need to know exactly what should go where. This guide will help you understand what you may need, and if you're still unsure, I'm always happy to help.
What Goes in an Order of Service?
Every funeral is different, so there is no single right way to create an Order of Service.
Depending on the ceremony, it might include:
Front Cover
The name of the person you're remembering, their dates, funeral date and location, together with a favourite photograph or meaningful design.
The Service
The running order provided by your minister, celebrant, funeral director or family.
Hymns & Songs
The titles of chosen music and, where appropriate, the words for everyone to sing.
Poems & Readings
A favourite poem, Bible reading, reflection or piece of writing that has special meaning.
Eulogy or Tribute
Some families choose to include the full tribute, while others simply list it within the running order.
Prayers & Blessings
These can be included where appropriate for a religious service.
Back Page
Often used for a family thank-you message, details of donations or a final photograph, verse or personal message.
There are no rules about making it look like everybody else's — it should feel right for the person you're remembering.
Example Order of Service
A simple guide to how a service might flow
An Order of Service could look something like this:
Entrance Music
Welcome & Opening Words
Hymn or Song
Reading or Poem
Eulogy / Tribute
Hymn or Piece of Music
Prayers or Reflection
Commendation & Farewell
Closing Hymn or Song
Exit Music
This is only an example. Every ceremony is different, and your minister, celebrant or funeral director will normally help you decide the running order for the service.
What Information Do I Need to Send?
Don't worry — it doesn't have to arrive perfectly organised
When you're ready, send as much of the following as you have:
Name & Dates — the name you'd like shown and birth/death dates if required.
Funeral Details — date, time and location of the service.
Running Order — this may come from your minister, celebrant or funeral director.
Photographs — your chosen cover photograph plus any additional photographs you'd like included.
Hymns, Poems & Readings — titles and wording where available.
Thank You Message — if you'd like one included on the back page.
Donation Details — charity or collection information, if applicable.
Design Ideas — favourite colours, flowers, hobbies, football team, scenery, occupation or anything else that reminds you of them.
Don't have all of these? That's absolutely fine. Send what you have and we can work from there.
Don't Have Everything Ready?
You don't need to have it all figured out
Sometimes you'll have a complete running order ready to send. Other times you might have a photograph, a few notes and absolutely no idea how they're supposed to become a booklet.
Both are completely fine.
I can help organise the information you've been given, suggest how photographs and wording could be arranged and create a design that brings everything together.
You'll also receive a proof before printing, giving you the opportunity to check the details and make any necessary changes.
